Curriculum Vitae: L. Andrew Coward I have over 30 years experience in the telecommunications industry, including all aspects of complex system design and manufacturing: system architecture and integrity; hardware and software system design, telecommunications technology. I have been carrying out research into the application of functionally complex system design technology to understanding biological brains including the human brain since 1982. Over my career at Nortel Networks from 1969 to 1999 I had a wide range of different responsibilities related to the design of complex, real time systems. On the semiconductor side these responsibilities included silicon process design, custom integrated circuit design, and design and testing environments for integrated circuit design. On the software side responsibilities included software design, design tool design including compiler design, design environment design including library and build systems and trouble tracking, support tools including debugging tools. On the hardware side responsibilities have included printed circuit board design and test tools and system packaging. On the system side responsibilities have included system architecture design, and hardware and software integrity and reliability. During this time I worked at a number of locations in Canada and the USA. I left Nortel Networks in 1999 in order to focus on my interests in understanding the architectures of biological brains, and combine my own consulting business on System Architectures with a Visiting Research fellowship at the Australian National University. My permanent home is in Vancouver, Canada. I was born in England, and graduated for Downing College, Cambridge University (UK) in 1965. I hold an M.A. Natural Sciences from that university.
