Background: the Australian Undergraduate Students' Computing Conference was born out of the efforts of Dr. Paul Gruba and a small group of undergraduate students from the Melbourne University - Computer Students' Association. The main impetus for forming AUSCC was the recognition that while undergraduate conferences were not uncommon in North America, the culture in Australia for promoting Information and Communications Technology (ICT) research at the undergraduate level had been less developed. It was clear that similar opportunities could greatly benefit ICT students in Australia also.

The AUSCC conference series is designed to be open to ICT students across Australia, and aims to foster a strong sense of community among Australian ICT students, educational institutions and industry. Conference organisers - undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of an academic supervisor - gain valuable communication, team work and time-management skills; undergraduate presenters gain research, writing and public speaking skills; both groups of students form an understanding of the inner-workings of the academic conference. All of these attributes are crucial for a successful career in either academic or industrial research, and are best learnt through experience. AUSCC serves as the ideal vehicle for providing Australian undergraduates in ICT with such experience, through a supportive setting of peer review and constructive feedback from the conference program committee.

One particularly important product of each AUSCC conference is its fully (faculty and postgraduate) refereed, published (with a registered ISBN) proceedings. The proccedings contains full papers and extended abstracts for the conference's tutorials and posters - all freely downloadable online or available from the proceedings' CD. It is the hope of the AUSCC organisers that these published papers will formalise the hard work of the contributing authors so as to bolster their academic records, especially for job, postgraduate admissions and scholarship applications. The proceedings also promise to inspire further generations of undergraduate researchers in the future.

AUSCC03 - the inaugural AUSCC - was held at the University of Melbourne's Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering, September 24-26 2003.
AUSCC04 - was held at RMIT University's School of Computer Science & Information Technology, December 8-10 2004.
AUSCC05 - is to be held at The Australian National University College of Engineering and Computer Science, November 28-29 2005.
