COMP1900 Lab Worksheet - Week 9 (Office Integration)
Introduction
This lab session is essentially a preparation for the Group Assignment (assessed in Week
12). In this session, you will be transferring some data from a United Nations Web site to an
Excel spreadsheet, consolidating the data, then using it to
prepare two files-
- a small presentation (using PowerPoint)
- a brief handout (using Word) to accompany your presentation.
Tasks to be completed
Prepare a spreadsheet
-
Launch Netscape or Internet Explorer.
-
Use the Web address
http://www.cyberschoolbus.un.org/infonation/info.asp
to display the United Nations Infonation Home Page.
-
Use the menu you see there to select any five Countries, then click on GO - a table of statistics
should
appear. (If it doesn't, wait a while then try again. If the problem
persists, see your tutor.)
If you don't like what you see, go back and select different countries.
- Use Copy and Paste to copy all the data in the table to a new Excel
spreadsheet. (You will need to launch Excel and open a new spreadsheet.)
- Use the menu provided to display one or two more tables for the same countries.
Use Copy and Paste to insert the data in these tables into your spreadsheet.
- Quit the Web browser. (You shouldn't need to refer to this Web site again.)
- Use Excel to consolidate the (somewhat scattered) data in your spreadsheet into a
compact table.
- Save your spreadsheet (under a suitable name), but don't close it. (You will need to
access it.)
Prepare a small presentation
- Launch PowerPoint. Use the data in your spreadsheet to create a presentation of about
5 slides.
Include in your slides a table and a chart. (You may need to return to
Excel to make a suitable table and chart.)
Add some appropriate text to your slides. Work on the slide show until you are satisfied that it looks
"professional".
- Save your presentation (under a suitable name), but don't close it. (You may need to
access it.)
Prepare a brief handout
Imagine that you will be presenting your slide show to a select audience. They will
expect to receive a (brief) handout at the start of your presentation.
- Use Word to prepare a suitable handout (one or two pages of A4).
Use Copy and Paste to import material from your spreadsheet and slide show into your handout.
The handout should include your name - your audience will want to know who you are - and an acknowledgement of your
data sources.
Work on the handout until you are satisfied that it looks "professional".
- Save your handout under a suitable name.
