Aims:

This module is designed to teach techniques for constructing web sites for the World Wide Web.

Objective:

After successful completion of COMP1900, students should be able to construct a simple web site.

The Internet and the World Wide Web
Web browsers
The World Wide Web Consortium
Software for building web pages - from simple text editors to professional authoring packages
Designing a web site-
- Who are you targeting?
- Naming Web pages - titles
- Controlling page layout - lists and tables
- Using images
- Navigation issues
Evaluating a web site-
- Navigability - obstacles and aids
- Finding the information you want - obstacles and aids
- Readability and page layout
- Use of visual and sound effects
HTML - the language of the Web (see A Beginner's Guide to HTML for a good introduction)
- The minimal HTML document - <html><head>...</head><body>.....</body></html>
- The basic markup tags-
  - Titles - <title>...</title>
  - Headings - <h1>...</h1>, ..., <h6>...</h6>
  - Paragraphs - <p>...</p>
  - Lists - unordered and ordered lists; nested lists
  - Blockquotes - <blockquote>...</blockquote>
  - Forced line breaks - <br>
  - Horizontal rules - <hr>
  - Character formatting - <b>...</b>, <i>...</i>, <tt>...</tt>
- Tables - <table>, <tr>, <td>
- Links (anchors) - the <a href="..."> and <a name="..."> tags
- In-line Images - the <img src="..." alt="..."> tag
  - Image types - .xbm .gif .jpg files
  - Image size attributes - height, width
  - Aligning images
- Building an HTML document
- Viewing an HTML document in a browser (eg Internet Explorer)
- Viewing a document's "source code" (HTML)
- A simple HTML document
