SUMMARY OF THE SESSION (150 - 250 words; what were most salient or | interesting topics & points) | | In the session by Adrian Paviour from the Australian Bureau of | Statistics(ABS), the topics covered on computing in the real world | were related in the ABS. The more interesting topics covered were on | the types of jobs the ABS offered including both programming and | non-programming skills, the importance of teamwork and what the ABS | were looking for in graduates. | | Firstly, there were many types of jobs the ABS offered, some examples | included network management, IT management and architecture in | research and development. The ABS also look for people with different | skills. These skills were the knowledge in different ranges of | languages of programming and also non-programming skills such as | system analysis, project management and system designers. | | Secondly, the importance of teamwork was another interesting point | covered. The speaker stressed that teamwork was a very important | attribute. He also stated that teams required a leader to manage the | project and to manage the staff. This leader must also play a role of | leading the staff. Adrian Paviour also emphasised that most of a | career will be related to teams and that any person must get used to | be working with people. | | Lastly, one of the more interesting and perhaps the most salient point | of the session was what the ABS were looking for in graduates. The few | main criteria pointed out were having good grades, being team players, | have other interests other than computing, the willingness to learn | and develop, to be future leaders and to have the initiative to do | things and not to do only what is being told. | | In conclusion, the session covered many other points including real | world examples. However, the types of jobs offered, the importance of | teamwork and what graduates needed were the more interesting points of | the session. | | | |
