SUMMARY OF THE SESSION (200-300 words; summary of the most salient / | interesting points) | | The session was focused on legal and ethical issues associated with | software engineering. It began by giving a brief overview of copyright | law and identifying what is covered by the different sections. It was | interesting to note that software programs are covered by sections of | copyright law related to literary works. | | The rights that a copyright holder may exercise were listed, and the | conditions that must be satisfied in order for an action to be | considered a breach of copyright were shown. The concept of fair use of | a copyright work was introduced. | | The focus of the talk was on the issues that arise when applying the | concepts of copyright to digital media. The key reason for this is | that unlike published materials it is impossible to distinguish a copy | with the original work. Digital systems are based on mechanisms that | make many copies of the work as it passes through the system. When are | there breaches of copyright? strictly speaking it would appear that | all of the copies are illegal. | | Roger gave the impression that the real issues have not yet been | resolved and the problems that are associated with copyright law will | need to be addresses if they are not to become a hindrance to further ^D | progress in digital technology. | |
