Proposed Assessment Scheme (to be confirmed in week 1)

The assessment scheme for COMP3120 includes three group assignments, eight workshops with associated activities, and one three-hour written exam at the end of the course.

Assessment Items

Assignments - 25%

Assignments will be completed in small groups of 3-4 students. Groups will be drawn from tutorial groups.

  • Assignment 1 (10%)
    Research report on an assigned topic related to the management of software development projects
    Draft due - Thursday 28 March (Week 6)
    Final due - Friday 24 May (Week 12)

  • Assignment 2 (10%)
    Peer review, including written feedback, of another group's draft of assignment 1
    Due - Friday 26 April (Week 8)

  • Assignment 3 (5%)
    Presentation, during the final workshop, of your research report.
    Due - During usual work shop sessions in Week 11

  • Peer Assessment
    Using the WebPA-x, peer assessment tool, students will be required to provide a peer assessment of the contribution of each member of their team for each assignment. This peer assessment will be used to generate individual marks for each assignment.

    COMPULSORY SUBMISSION
    As peer assessment is used to calculate individual marks it is compulsory for all students to submit a peer assessment survey at the same time as submitting the assignment. Late submission will incur a 25% of the peer assessed mark.

Workshops - 25%

  • Workshop Preparation & Participation (10%)
    Prior to each workshop there will be a short on-line quizz due according to the workshop schedule.
    Materials developed during the workshop and quality of interaction within the group and the class at large.

  • Post-workshop reflection (15%)
    Due three days after completion of each workshop, according to the workshop schedule

Examination - 50%

  • One, three-hour written examination during the official examination period at the end of the course

Assessment Calendar

Important Notes

  • Requirements to pass the course
    To pass, students must achieve a final mark of at least 50%. In addition,students must also receive at least 40% for the Assignment and Workshop components and at least 45% for the final exam.

  • Moderation Final marks may be moderated by the School of Computer Science examiners' meeting.
