Can't save any files

You can't save changes to a file, or can't create or copy new files, or get mysterious "Unable to update .ICEauthority" warnings when you log on. Open a terminal:

Terminal with quota command

Since all students share one (large) disk drive, we have to put a limit how much space any one student can use - the quota. If the number on the left is equal to or greater than the number on the right, you are over quota and can't create or modify any files. In the terminal run this command:

/usr/local/bin/clean-account-files.sh
This deletes any files that you've put in the Trash but not yet emptied, and any files cached by Firefox during web browsing.

Then run quota again and see if you are now under the limit. If not, look for really big files in your account such as videos and delete those. (A good start is du -s -k ./* in your home directory.)
