- 12:30pm Thurs May 4th, ANU Union Square
Bike Lights Campaign Launch
Pity about the heavy rain -- got a rather scant attendance.
Anyway, it was interesting to see Brendan Smyth MLA talk.
Light sets were given away - the consolation of a small turn-out
was that this increased the chances of those that attended
of winning a draw! Indeed, yours truly won a set of top-of-its-class
CatEye battery operated halogen lights.
Not needing them myself, and in lieu of a response from the csitRTW
mailing list, I decided to award them to the first CS Honours student
whom I saw leaving CSIT on a bike without lights after sunset.
I did not have to wait long :) ... congratulations to Vijay Boyapati!
- 12:30pm Fri May 12,
Heart Week Ride to Deakin Shops
It was an absolutely beautiful autumn day for a ride, and when I got there
it was quite packed from cyclists from the Inner North / South,
plus representatives from the Heart Foundation.
I donated $10 but in return got a Heart Foundation T-shirt.
I met up with June Hornby and a few members of her JCMSR RTW group,
and we had a pleasant ride back.
- May 25, ANU Cyclists Reference Group
This is a meeting run by ANU Facilities & Services
in conjunction with interested ANU staff
(last one held was 2 yrs ago; I put my hand up to be on it at time -
evidently this was how I got asked to form a RTW group...).
Some points of possible interest from the minutes
(I have these but am unsure if I can publish on the web):
- Stage 3 of the
ANU CyclePath Network is completed with the link from Lake Burley Griffin
cycle path to Fellows Rd (east side of Sullivans Ck -- FYI the west
side was originally preferred, but blocked by
lobbyists fearing that this would threaten an ANU
marsupial breeding unit in that area during Aug 1998).
-
An extension of this from Fellows Rd to the Union (on east side of
creek) may be made in the future.
-
In 2000, as part of the RSISE/CSIT Landscaping Phase II,
it is planned to put in a new path from western side of North Road (nr
ANUTech), across Daley Rd, past RSISE to the CSIT Bikeshed.
May be useful for some of us!
-
It was reported that with the increased
Offence Provisions of the New National Road Rules,
the Police will be more vigorously enforcing the law
that cyclists must have adequate lights if riding after sunset --
fair enough too, if you ask me. Helmet wearing too
(don't smile Trev, I wear one regularly now). And
the AFP will in particular target ... ANU !
Punctures are perhaps the most irksome problem facing cyclists,
especially when commuting (and you need to get from A to B
in reliable time). I have a number of tiups - but even then
get one about every 400km - and that's too often!
Lets make this for September. Anyone got any tips, email or tell
me about it over July / August.
Well thats it for this month (these months). Happy cycling! -Peter.
