Feature: Skate To Work

`Skating To Work' shares many of the aims and benefits of RTW. In this bulletin, veteran skater and new DCS member Pascal Vuylesteker tells of his tips and experiences (including where to get some bargain good quality skates if you're quick!) in his article Skate To Work.

News: Obscured number plates by Bikeracks

(forwarded from Terry Shields, PP)
Police are currently running a blitz on obscured number plates on cars. Bicycle carrier racks and the tow balls and attachments that hold them could become expensive appendages if your rear licence plate is not clearly visible. If your number plate is obscured by a bike rack, you have to get a bike rack licence plate (a homemade plate won't do). Cost $26.50. Can be ordered from Motor Registry and government shopfronts

Lobbying for a 50Km/h Street

(forwarded from Terry Shields, PP)
Do you want a 60kmh street you cycle on to be made safer by having it rezoned to 50kmh? On NSW streets where the speed limit has been lowered from 60kmh to 50kmh the number of accidents has fallen by over 20% and, as a cyclist, we don't have to tell you that's a good thing. During Canberra's current trial of 50kmh limits, streets that zoned 60kmh can be rezoned 50kmh. But you have to let the Minister know. If you have a street where you want the speed limit to be lowered then email the Minister for Urban Services, WOOD@act .gov.au, write to GPO Box 1020, Canberra ACT 2601 or ring 6205 0005. Make sure you include your name and address in the email so they know you are a genuine person. Already six streets have had their speed limit lowered because people have contacted the Minister.

Re: Hazard Reporting

Having recently tried the new on-line system for hazard reporting for the William Slim underpass (heavy rains had caused a tree to fall across the path, plus exacerbated the gradually accumulating mud deposits), I was pleasantly surprised that within a week, DUS had rectified both problems! Now the underpass is safer than its been for many a long year. Thanks DUS! (Maybe I will try them again on removing those grab rails this year...)

Recent Events: CSIT Ride Sat Jan 12

Six riders set out from CSIT at 8:30am on an unexpectedly cool midsummer's morning for a relaxed ride through the eastern basin and picturesque Wetlands. Bill and Victoria kindly offered refreshments at their place (instead of Regatta Point). After that, the riders felt a bit frisky, so we decide to climb nearby Mt Ainslie, returning about 11:30am.

Upcoming Event: CSIT Team for Big Canberra Bike Ride

The Canberra Connect Big Bike Ride is a participation ride organized by PP, and supports the National Heart Foundation. It starts 8.30am Monday 18 March 2002, and involves a relaxed 25km ride around Canberra streets.

We are organizing a CSIT/FEIT team entry; if you'd like to join in, please contact Peter by cob Tuesday March 12. We will meet on Canberra Day at 8am at CSIT, or at 8:15am at Blundell's Cottage (to get your coffee, you will need to register!).

Well thats it for these 2 months. Happy cycling! -Peter.
