Update on Green Bike Lanes and Shared Paths

Just to record some informal discussions on our mailing list, the green painted bike lanes purpose to motorists is that they the should watch for and give way to cyclists in the lane (and for cyclists to take care as these are considered potential danger points).

Note that where a bike line an entry/exit lane, the dotted `tramlines' marking the side of the lane indicate the cyclist has right of way (and in the case of the green lanes, the green will continue along this part). In other places, if the lane's markings disappear at the intersection (there will usually be a `kink' in the lane just before this), the cyclist must give way.

An update on the controversial issue on all users keep left on shared paths, the ACT Government recently announced a trial of 'keep left for all path users' around the shared paths around the Lakes. Will be interesting to hear of their conclusions...

  • Festival of Cycling Breakfast, Weds Oct 8
This year, the PP event is 7-8.30 am at Veteran's Park cnr Northbourne Ave and Bunda St. There, MLA Bill Wood will launch this year's Festival Of Cycling. As it an interesting opportunity to meet fellow cyclists, see displays etc, I think its worthwhile (cant get there myself that week though).
BTW, the Festival Of Cycling has lots of interesting events coming up, including Tharwa/Fitz's Challenge (new route this year).

  • DCS enters a team in the Mont 24hr Race, Oct 12-13
A certain MTB exponent has persuaded 6 others from/associated with DCS to form a team to enter in this now infamous event. There will be over 1000 riders doing laps of the 18 km course through the Kowen Forest. Already, doing a single practice lap has proved to be an adventure...
