To me, the only point seemed to be to remind drivers turning left into North Rd to give way to cyclists continuing along Daley Rd. Peter Lamb, however, has pointed out that it would be dangerous for a cyclist exiting that lane to merge into the narrowing road lane, and has raised the issue with ANU Facilities and Services. Furthermore, he pointed out the Australian Road Rules (rule 247) compel cyclists to use bicycle lanes where they are marked... Peter has asked F&S to reconsider.
F&S' initial reply was that the lane was installed in response to issues raised with the last Cyclists Reference Group meeting. While I don't seem to have a copy of the minutes, my recollection is that issue was vehicles exiting North Rd often did not giving way to cyclists on the opposite side of Daley Rd!
Do any other people have opinions on the subject?
Well thats it for these 2 months. Happy cycling! -Peter S.
