Facilities & Services

The Department of Computer Science maintains ten large laboratories for use by students undertaking studies within the department. Two of these labs are for third year project students, final year software engineering or honours students only, and contain a mixture of Linux and other systems. We also maintain a lab for our e-science students. The remaining labs contain PCs with LCD screens and Linux installed, they can either operate independently or as X-Terminals running off our high speed Solaris servers. All students within the department have access to these labs.

The Computer Science labs are available 24 hours a day to Computer Science students. Also each computer has front mounted USB ports. Printers are also available.

Email, News and Web Access

All ANU Students have access to email and web access services. The Department of Computer Science relies heavily on electronic news and mail to communicate with students. Early in each semester, the Department runs orientation labs to ensure students are familiar with the use of such tools.

Women in Engineering and Information Technology

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology has a policy of actively encouraging women to apply for its courses. The Faculty's staff includes a Coordinator of Women in Engineering and Information Technology.Generally, women are an under-represented group in IT. We have found our Women in Information Technology Workshops to be a successful way to help redress this imbalance in our undergraduate community.

Other Computer Services on Campus

The ANU Information Commons provides other computer facilities on the ANU Campus. This includes almost 1000 Apple Macintosh, PC's and X-Terminals which are available to the ANU community.

Student Representation

The Computer Science Students Association is the body representing Computer Science Students at ANU. The Head of Department is advised by a Departmental Committee, which includes student representation.
