Honours Admission

Admission to the Honours program is available to students undertaking a relevant undergraduate degree, e.g. Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Science (with a major in Computer Science). All applications for admission are considered on their individual merits, with admission at the discretion of the Head of Department. Normally applicants must meet the following minimum criteria, although meeting these does not guarantee admission.

• Completion (or imminent completion) of the requirements for a relevant undergraduate degree.
• Completion of 48 units (the equivalent of one year of full-time study) of later year (2000 series or above) computing related courses, at least half of which must be at third year level or above (3000 series or above). At ANU these courses normal have a COMPxxxx code, though a limited number of other relevant courses, e.g. ENGN, MATH, and INFS, may be considered at the department's discretion.
• Attainment of a Grade Point Average in excess of 2 for the most recently completed 48 units of courses satisfying the above criteria. The GPA is calculated as an average, weighted by the course loads, of the values attached to the grades in the following table.

Other factors may be taken into account, including:

• the suitability of the undergraduate program the student has completed to serve as preparation for the department's Honours program, and
• availability within the department of resources and appropriate supervision.

The Honours program includes advanced course work and a major individual project worth 50% of the year. A single Honours grade is awarded on the result of the whole year's work. The single course in which you enrol will encompass all of your course and project work. Your selection of courses (subjects) and research project is made within the department once your enrolment has been accepted.

Current ANU Students

In the later half of Semester 2 you should meet with the Honours Convener to discuss your intention to apply for admission to the Honours program. You should subsequently provide the Honours convener with a copy of your academic results (a transcript or a printout from ISIS) together with a brief note stating that you wish to be considered for admission to the Honours program. You will be notified of the result once your application has been considered. If you application is successful, you will be able to enrol in the appropriate courses (see below) via ISIS in the usual way.

Students undertaking a degree in Information Technology enrol in the course INFT4005F if undertaking full-time study, or INFT4005P if undertaking part-time study. Students undertaking a Bachelor of Science degree enrol in either COMP4005F or COMP4005P as appropriate. Note that these courses run in both first and second semesters; you must enrol in the same course each semester for the duration of your Honours program - either two or four semesters. (Students commencing mid-year enrol in the second-semester version and then subsequently enrol in the first-semester version for the following year.)

Applications for admission should be made on the appropriate form (PDF) and sent to the address indicated on the form. Note that applications to commence Honours in Semester 1 next year close on October 31st, although late applications may be considered.

You may select to apply for either the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours (program code 3600 - course code COMP4005F [full-time] or COMP4005P [part-time]) or the degree of Bachelor of Information Technology with Honours (program code 3701 - course code INFT4005F [full-time] or INFT4005P [part-time]). Students intending to undertake full-time study need to enrol in the respective course for two semesters, while those undertaking part-time study enrol for four semesters.

You should notify the Honours Convener as soon as possible of your intention to apply and lodge your application as soon as you are able to obtain a transcript of your academic record from your current institution.
