The relative participation rates of Australian Universities in ten scientific fields for 1988-1992 were assessed by recording the numbers of publications written by academics at Australian universities cited in the Science Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information in Philadelphia, USA.

The Australian National University had the largest share of publications in

• Information and Computing (21%)
• Mathematical Sciences (21%)
• Earth Sciences (18%)
• Biology (12%)
• Chemical Sciences (11%)
