Title: Department of Computer Science Seminar Date: Thursday, April 27, 2000 Time: 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm Venue: Room N101, CSIT Building [108] Speaker: Dr Dave Thomas Description: "Industrially Relevant University CS Education & Research - An Oxymoron or The Role of The University In the New Economy" Abstract Either the entire idea of "industrially relevant" makes no sense or the university needs to take it serious. In this talk we take a critical look at what the university experience offers; and what industry demands noting major shortcomings in both. We argue that leading edge research is very important except that most university basic and applied research isn't leading edge. We discuss what works and what doesn't work in transitioning technology to industry. The argument is that it isn't up to industry alone to transition new ideas into practice, and that the universities need to pull their weight. We look at the changing nature of software engineering with web time development and extreme programming. Finally we discuss the challenges of doing research in small teams, with limited funding and far away from the bright lights of Silicon Valley.
