*********** Please notice the new date ********** Title: Department of Computer Science Seminar Date: Monday, 16 June 2003 Time: 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm Venue: Room N101, CSIT Building [108] Title: Big data, fast networks and wide displays - A tale of Internet Futures Speaker: Dr. Markus Buchhorn (Visiting Fellow, ANU DCS) Abstract: The Internet Futures group was set up by the ANU in 2002 to examine and deploy upcoming Internet-based technologies which could support the University's research and education missions, and raise its profile as a preeminent institution. Its interests include managing large-scale data sets, faster and smarter network services, domestic to international network connectivity, and tele-collaboration technologies. This talk will outline the IF group's background, its current and planned projects, and its misuse of the student population and the FEIT vehicles. Concepts such as GrangeNet, Access-Grid nodes, Virtual Observatories, multicast, and IP Telephony will be bandied about in a most dangerous fashion. Acronyms may be let loose without warning. Biography: Everybody knows Markus. If you're not Everybody, his PhD is in Astrophysics, his post-PhD background is as programmer, sysadmin and technical manager for high performance computing and networking research groups, and roving part-time consultant to various parts of the University.
