Title: Department of Computer Science Seminar Date: Friday, 11 July 2003 Time: 11:00 am to 12:00 Venue: Room N101, CSIT Building [108] Title: Introduction of a private workspace into Spin3D Speaker: Edwin Gibbons Abstract: This talk describes the process and results of the software enhancement project undertaken as a stage with the Graphix team within the Laboratoire d'Informatique Fondamentale de Lille (LIFL) at the University des Sciences et Technologies de Lille France(USTL) between February and June 2003. Spin3D is a collaborative, non-immersive, virtual workspace for a small number (1 to 5) of participants using standard networked PC class workstations running the Windows operating system. Each participant makes use of a selection device and a manipulation device to interact with the shared virtual environment on their workstation. The use of a single shared workspace within Spin3D did not fully meet the user's needs. It was not possible to experiment privately with the individual objects without interfering with the activities of other participants. The creation of a private workspace was proposed to alleviate this problem. While a user is working within their private workspace, they can trial various solutions to problems and thus test their comprehension before demonstrating it to other users in the shared workspace. Biography: Edwin is one of this year's eScience Masters. He has done his project at the LIFL (Liile France), in a group working on Collaborative Work through Virtual Reality.
