Title: Department of Computer Science Seminar Date: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 Time: 4:00 pm to 5:00pm Venue: Room N101, CSIT Building [108] Speaker: Hugh Fisher Title: The Programmable 3D Graphics Revolution Abstract: Interactive 3D computer graphics are usually built on a standard fixed function rendering pipeline architecture that has not changed significantly in design since the early 1980's. In the past couple of years revolutionary new designs for 3D graphics have appeared: the programmable GPUs from nVidia and ATI. In this seminar I will talk about the ancestry of the fixed function 3D architecture, the extensions mechanism used to add new capabilities to OpenGL and the associated difficulties, and the rise of the new programmable GPUs. These are a new and rapidly changing technology that I've only just begun to explore, but I hope to give an overview of the terminology, how to get started as a developer, and the potential for the future. Biography: Hugh Fisher is a researcher in the Dept of Computer Science at ANU who rambles on about 3D graphics at the slightest excuse.
