############################################################ Seminar Announcement Department of Computer Science, FEIT The Australian National University ############################################################ Date: Wednesday, 23 November 2005 Time: 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm Venue: Room N101, CSIT Building [108] Speaker: Christopher C. Aycock Title: Progressive Messages: Tracking Message Progress Through Events Abstract: High-end computing systems tend to be loosely coupled because of the performance, price, scalability and reliability advantages of dense, distributed systems. Current computing tools however are very rigid and do not cope well with dynamic or unplanned changes, such as a crash in part of the system. Such is particularly true of communications tools or computing frameworks that rely on messages over a network. Users often must `design around' these inflexible structures to handle unplanned incidents or to develop fault tolerance. This talk will present the Progressive Messages model of communication, which addresses the above concerns by providing a scheme that alerts the user whenever an `event' occurs within the network. Here an event is triggered whenever a message enters a new state of progress, such as submission, arrival or failure. Progressive Messages provides the primitives the user needs to develop application-specific solutions. Biography: Christopher C. Aycock received his BS and MS from Penn State and is currently a PhD student at Oxford. He is a visiting fellow at ANU under Richard Brent. His interest is in software tools that make high-performance computing more accessible.
