Abstract: The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at ANU holds annual workshops to encourage women into tertiary studies and professional careers, alternating between Engineering and Information Technology year by year. July 8-9 1996 was the occasion of the first FEIT Women in Information Technology workshop - WIT. The workshop activities aimed to excite and inform prospective IT students from year 11 and 12 secondary level about some of the practices and potential of IT. The representative activities were World Wide Web information retrieval, creation of home pages, an introduction to graphical functional programming, computer mediated communication in action, and problem solving in teams. There were also speakers and discussions on career experiences from women at various stages in IT careers, all based in Canberra but with quite a range of educational and professional histories. This talk will summarise the aims, methods and outcomes of the workshop activities from the perspective of one of the directed-anarchic group of organisers. 7.
