6. Abstract: 

In this talk I will introduce an algorithm developed by Paul Mackerras
and myself for efficiently transferring data over a high-latency
low-bandwidth link when you already have an "old version" of the data
at the destination end of the link.

The algorithm uses a two-hash scheme to enable it to transfer just the
differences in the data over the link. The algorithm has a wide
variety of applications ranging from distributed filesystems to backup
systems.

An implementation of the algorithm in the form of an enhanced version
of rcp is available at ftp://samba.anu.edu.au/pub/rsync. A technical
report on the algorithm can be found in the same place.
