4. Title: Information Retrieval: Current Problems & Issues


5. Target Audience: honours students and above

6. Abstract: 

  Contemporary information retrieval theory is elegant but at odds with 
  observations about term dependencies within documents, and the best
  available IR systems attempt to accomodate both.  This talk descibes
  these discrepencies, and argues for the need to recognise and deal with
  term dependencies. It suggests some methods for doing so, and provides
  some experimental justification for the adequacy of those methods.

7. Biography

Paul Thistlewaite is Leader of the PASTIME Project of the Cooperative
Research Center for Advanced Computational Systems at ANU, and he is a
Visiting Fellow in the ANU Department of Computer Science. Dr
Thistlewaite holds the degress of BA (Queensland) and PhD (ANU).
