Speaker: Professor Guo-Liang Chen 2. Time: 3:00pm - 4:00pm, Monday, 18th November 1996 3. Place: Room N101 in the Department of Computer Science Ground Floor, CSIT Building, ANU 4. Title: Parallel Computer Architectures and Parallel Computation Models 5. Target Audience: honours students and above 6. Abstract: The main purpose of this talk is to try to unify the study of parallel computer architecture models, parallel algorithm models and parallel programming models. We first discuss the large-scale parallel computer architecture models and their characteristics of SMP, MPP, COW and DSM. And then we assess the more realistic computation models including APRAM model, BSP model, Logp model and $C^{3}$ model. Lastly, we evaluate the parallel programming models including implicit model, data-parallel model, shared-variable model and message-passing model. The concluding remarks are also given at the end of this talk. Biography: Professor G.L. Chen is a Professor of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He has published over 90 journal and conference papers and book chapters in the area of computer architectures, interconnection networks, parallel algorithms and intelligent computation. His current research interest lies mainly in parallel and distributed algorithms, neural networks, and genetic algorithms. Professor Chen is the author of "Parallel Algorithms: Sorting and Selection", "Design and Analysis of Parallel Algorithms", and co-author of "Interconnection Networks: Structure and Analysis", "Computational Theory and Parallel Algorithms for VLSI", "Neural Networks and their Applications", and "Genetic Algorithms and their Applications". He was on leave as a Visiting Scientist at the University of Florida (1981), Purdue University (1982-1983, 1993), and University of Tokyo (1984, 1992, 1995). He is a Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Technology of USTC, and a Director of the Chinese High Performance Computing Center (CHPCC) of Hefei. 8.
