4. Title:    On Translation of Complex Value Calculus Queries with 
             Arithmetic Operators

6. Abstract: 
   
While it is relatively straightforward to provide scalar functions in
the context of the relational algebra, or a many-sorted algebra for
complex values, supporting this in the calculus is significantly more
difficult. I shall show how we have generalised the usual approach to
implementing the complex value calculus with arithmetic operators.
   
I shall briefly review the P-join operator which was presented in my
previous work. Then I shall present an algorithm for transforming
algebra expressions which include join operator(s) into equivalent,
but more efficient, algebra expressions with P-join operator(s).

7. Biography

Mr Hong-Cheu Liu has been a PhD student in the Department of Computer
Science at The Australian National University since July 1996.  His
research interests include database theory, query optimisation, logic
programming. He is also interested in constraint query languages, and
deductive object-oriented databases.
