Barbie girl, in a Barbie world, is a computer engineer? by Heather McEwen
Barbie's 2010 career, by popular vote, is Computer Engineer! Here's what she looks like (from Mattel's website). Read the ASCII code on her laptop for a secret hidden message!
Cindy Wang, Geek Girl Extraordinaire, who coordinates the ANU Girl Geek Coffee Club, had her tongue firmly in her cheek (is this possible?) when she commented, "I can't quite put my finger on why she doesn't accurately look like any one of us... maybe it's the choice of colours, not pink enough... but I do think it is a good way to promote computing and engineering as a possible career option to young girls. I even admit to playing with Barbie dolls and computer games, so I know her power over little ones!"
It's just one more fun topic to have a chat about, and unwind over coffee at the first Geek Girl meeting for 2010 (Friday 26 February from 4.00 to 5.00pm at the As You Like It Cafe (aka The Street Theatre Cafe). RSVP to Cindy - that's Cindy with a 'C' and no rival to Barbie, by 22 February 2010. We promise there will be no pink icing.
