Computing careers night a runaway success
More than 120 parents and prospective students braved the rain pre ‘State of Origin’ to come to ANU and meet staff and students from the School of Computer Science on 26th May 2010.
“I was absolutely thrilled to welcome so many committed parents and perhaps future students to this, the first event of its kind for the School, which we combined with the launch of our new Bachelor of Advanced Computing degree,” said Dr Henry Gardner, Head of School.
“Everyone took advantage of the time to talk to our staff, current students, and alumni, about what opportunities are available for study, and the kinds of careers that are possible after graduation,” he said.
Dr Gardner was particularly enthusiastic about the new degree which he believes will produce a new breed of computing graduate, and which has been developed in response to rapid change and growth in the computing industry.
“These days computers are required to act more intelligently in many different contexts and they need to deal with huge and pervasive streams of data,” said Dr Gardner.
“New and emerging trends are strengthening the link between computing and other disciplines and becoming skilled in these new uses for computer technologies will lead students into fascinating new worlds,” he said.
Dr Gardner said he would particularly like to thank the organisers, staff and students that gave so freely of their time and expertise to make the evening truly interactive, and which went a long way to inspiring guests.
“The main message that we want to get out to everyone is that a computing degree from ANU opens up a world of possibilities, particularly in dynamic new jobs in newly emerging fields, and that we have the know-how to provide the best computing teaching and learning environment to do that, right here in our School,” concluded Dr Gardner.
The Bachelor of Advanced Computing will be offered to students in 2011.
