Big ideas - by Heather McEwen

Undergraduate students from the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science are organising the Imagine Cup Game Camp weekend on 23 and 24 October 2010.

“The Imagine Cup Game Gamp is a completely free 2-day games development workshop,” said Thavidu Ranatunga, a member of the Computer Science Students Association (CSSA) at The Australian National University (ANU), and 4th Year student in the School of Computer Science.

“We will be using XNA Games Studio and a speaker from Microsoft will be leading everyone through actually making a game over the course of the two-day period,” he said.

Industry guest speakers from local game studios in Canberra are also attending the event, and at the end of the two days the best games will be judged and prizes will be awarded.

“The idea behind Microsoft’s Imagine Cup is for people to use their knowledge and creativity and challenge themselves to come up with games that will basically change the world,” said Thavidu. This year’s Cup is themed around the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals to alleviate poverty and help people and countries to grow and prosper.

“That’s a big ask, but if you think of the way games, or at least interactive technologies, can help to meet real global needs, like building more sustainable cities, then you get the picture,” he said.

“At the local event participants don’t have to develop games around the Millennium Development Goals, but we are really encouraging them to try,“ he said. “You never know, one of the winning teams from ANU could go on to the international Imagine Cup world finals in 2011!”
