Student ambassador program launched
By Heather McEwen
The Engineering and Computer Science Student Ambassador Program is an exciting opportunity for current students to be actively involved in promoting the College to prospective students while also gaining valuable professional skills and training that will help them after graduation.
"Seventeen enthusiastic and motivated students in engineering and computing have joined the Student Services Team for outreach activities," said Mr Paul Melloy, Manager of Student Services.
Selected to represent the College for various recruitment events and activities around Australia, our Ambassadors share knowledge with prospective students based on their own experience at ANU and talk to prospective students about living in Canberra. They discuss accommodation issues (on and off campus), pathways to university, what it's like to be a university student, and of course the subjects they are studying.Activities that Ambassadors become involved in include College and High School visits, University Expos, Open Day and many other events like the Science and Engineering Challenge, the Get Set program and Maths Day. Ambassadors make presentations to prospective students and conduct tours of the engineering and computer science precinct for visiting students and VIP’s.
Engineering and computing are catalysts for change in the modern world. Yet many high school students have no idea what these disciplines entail, as they are not exposed to them at school. For example, recent global events like the political upheaval in the Middle East focus attention on the power of computing, and engineering know-how influences how we deal with environmental disasters.
"Our new Student Ambassador Program is an ideal way for high school and college students to discover what engineering and computing are all about," said Mr Melloy.
We welcome enquiries from Careers advisers and teachers about a school visit. Please contact Student Services to arrange individual visits, and see our outreach events webpage for a calendar of upcoming events.
