ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) research student, Xi Yang, has received a Google PhD Fellowship, one of only three awarded in Australia, and 40 worldwide, recognising his work on Energy Aware Computing.
The Google PhD Fellowships were created ‘to recognise outstanding graduate students doing exceptional work in computer science, related disciplines, or promising research areas.’
“I am delighted to hear about Xi Yang’s win,” said Professor John Hosking, Dean of CECS.
“The application process and requirements for the awards are rigorous, and the competition is fiercely competitive, which make’s Xi Yang’s win all the more impressive,” he said.
Broadly, energy aware computing is a field of computer science that advances all aspects of energy efficient computing so that consumers, business and the environment benefit.
Xi Yang’s research focuses on understanding how software can most effectively utilize emerging hardware to maximize performance and energy efficiency.
Xi Yang was also co-author on a paper, “Looking Back on the Language and Hardware Revolutions: Measured Power, Performance, and Scaling" recently published by the prestigious Communications of the ACM (CACM) Research Highlights, and the IEEE Micro’s TopPicks 2011, which selects the 12 best papers in computer architecture for 2011.
“Congratulations to Xi Yang on both achievements,” said Professor Hosking.
