The CS&IT Building Occupational Health and Safety Committee Meeting Date: Tuesday, 11 April 2000 Time: 14:05-14:40 Venue: CSIT N320 (DCS Library) present: Michelle Clarke, Chris Gunn, Denise Hollingsworth, Margot Napier, Peter Strazdins apologies: Henry Gardner MINUTES: 1. Minutes of previous meeting. confirmed. 2. Matters arising. 2.1 OSLO representative for CSIT Peter suggested Margot to become representative. Margot asked to wait till her appointment in DCS was finalized. ACTION: Peter to followup when this occurs. 2.2 car park safety for gravel park opposite CSIT (context: places at either end are too short, resulting in end of car protruding on the road) Michelle spoke to Alex Chryss (Facilities & Services) on this matter. Made Authorized Parking at place on south end as a result. Denise said was still a hazard 8-8:30 am. ACTION: Michelle to pass this back to Alex Chryss. 2.3 CSIT pillar visibility Peter reported that Facilities & Services were contacted last Jan. They would not approve of any solution spoiling aesthetics of the building, eg wasp markings. Their solution was to paint pillars red, the same as the doors (done early Feb). Visibility does seem significantly improved. 2.4 security lighting & gutter crossing for CSIT Bikeshed area Peter reported he met with Jim Pollard from Facilities & Services late last January on installing security lighting for dark areas between CSIT Bikeshed and N101. He proposed two permanent top lighting features (costs $2500) to be installed by late February. It hasnt been installed yet - possibly due to excavations for the Link Building in the sane area. ACTION: Peter to followup. Peter reported that he requested the gutter crossing to Alex Chryss at about the same time. It was in place by mid February. 2.5 clearing of grass Chemistry Car park Michelle reported that this had been done and the visibility had improved. Of current concern is the roadworks outside the carpark. 2.6 CSIT Electrical Safety Audit: progress Peter reported that this had begun. Chris brought up particular hazard of water from faulty air conditioning on Machine Room floor (occurred late last February), which could get into the many power boards resting there. Chris suggested drainage holes could be drilled to alleviate this hazard. ACTION: Peter to consult with Bob on the issue, and make request to Facilities & Services if deemed necessary. 3. NTEU OH&S Campaign 2000 Peter reported on the Campaign. The relevant features of this are on Occupational Overuse and Overwork (and resulting stress). Some fliers available from Peter; other info from http://www.nteu.org.au/OHS/ohs.html ACTION: Peter to put up some relevant fliers and report on any developments relevant to CSIT. 4. future meeting dates. Peter noted a University requirement of 4 such meetings per year. The dates proposed are 11am, 1st Tuesday of June (6/6), September (5/9) and December (5/12). 5. Any other business. 5.1 Michelle reported ANU's draft for First Aid Services is circulated. Peter (also CSIT First Aid office has a copy). Currently CSIT is not part of a First Aid Domain - it is unclear whether this will apply to us. ACTION: may be raised at future meeting if deemed relevant to CSIT. 5.2 OHS Audit. Michelle also reported that in 2000 the OHS Audit Program will be targeting several areas, of which Confined Spaces may be relevant to CSIT. 5.3 OHS Training. Michelle reported that the next Occupational Strains training (see 2.1) would be in August, next First Aid in June. Peter has a comprehensive list of all courses on offer. 5.4 ANU Sign obstructing north bike path Chris reported that when this sign went up some years ago, people though this might be a hazard for cyclists at night. ACTION: Peter & Michelle to look into.
