The CSIT Building Occupational Health and Safety Committee Meeting ================================================================== Date : Tuesday 7 December 2004 Time : 14:05 - 14:35 Place: CSIT N335 present: James Fellows, Chris Gunn, Damien McAullay, Vicki Peterson(chair), Peter Strazdins, Bronwyn Schmidt, Sarah Thornton (OHS unit representative) apologies: Ian Barnes MINUTES: 1. Noting of Apologies and Minutes of previous meeting (http://cs.anu.edu.au/ohs/minutes/Sep04). Apologies noted. Minutes confirmed. 2. Matters Arising: 2.1 Local Policy for Children Within the Workplace Vicki Peterson was advised by Roy Schmid in an email that the University's Children Within the Workplace policy would be going through the EDU committee shortly. Since the Local Policy is based on the University's policy, it seemed a good idea to wait for the updated University policy. Sarah Thornton offered to find out the current status of the ANU policy. 2.2 Changed door proposals for CSIT Tea Room - in response to concerns about collisions between people entering the Tea Room with people exiting the Computer Science kitchen area. Vicki inquired of Chris Kalos (FEIT Finance Officer) about the possibility of having a window installed on the 'In' door to provided visibility of traffic on the other side; he will look into the feasibility and report back. Bronwyn suggested that we could simply close the near door into the CS kitchen area to encourage people to use the far exit from the kitchen instead of using the one near the entrance door to the Tea Room. No resolution was taken. 3. Review CSIT Hazard and Injury Reports No outstanding reports (but see under New Hazard reports) 4. New Hazard reports 4.1 01-11-2004 James Fellows reported an accident (no injuries) in which he fell off backwards from an adjustable chair when the chair back broke. Investigation showed that a contributing problem was that the 'stopper' that should have prevented the back from being raised too high was missing. Other chairs of the same type were checked, and two additional chairs were found to be missing the 'stoppers'. These were removed from general use and are waiting for repairs from the manufacturer's representative. ACTION: Bronwyn will supply details about the type of chair to Sarah, who will alert the OHS Unit for possible issuance of a general hazard warning about that kind of chair. 4.2 hazard report by member of CSIRO staff about rain-slicked textured pavement inserts (for slight impaired people) near the CSIT Bldg. Damien reported that the ANU has promised to 'spray' them with somthing to make them non-slip. 5. Other Business. 5.1 Requested additional 'Don't Let Your Posture Cost You' posters have not yet been received from the OHS Unit. ACTION: Sarah to look into it. 5.2 It was noted that Computer Science does not have any current First Aid Officers. Damien reported that the CSIRO side has three First Aid Officers. They are: Damien McAullay, S336, 6216 7084 Wayne Vandermeer, S220, 6216 7029 Anthea Roberts, S309, 6216 7034 ACTION: Bronwyn to look into whether the Computer Science First Aid Kit is up-to-date. 5.3 It was noted that Stephen Altree-Williams has retired from the OHS Unit and that Roy Schmid is currently acting head of the OHS Unit. 5.4 Chris Gunn reported that the VE Lab is moving out of the FEIT side of the CSIT Bldg into the CSIRO side of the building. Chris was invited to remain on the CSIT OHS committee. Vicki Peterson 10-12-2004
