The CSIT Building Occupational Health and Safety Committee (Meeting) ================================================================== Date: Wednesday 28 March 2007 Time: 14:05-14:35 Venue: CSIT N335 Present: Lynnette Johns-Boast, James Fellows, Jocelyn Smith, Doug Palmer, Peter Strazdins (chair) Apologies: Ian Barnes, James Sheridan, Deanne Drummond MINUTES: 1. Apologies / Membership Apologies noted. Jocelyn and Deanne were welcomed to the Committee, De also to take the role of OSLO. Thanks to Ian Barnes was noted for acting as chair over S2, 2006. 2. Minutes of previous meeting Approved. 3. Matters arising: 3.1 Problems with the CSIT lift James reported contractors had replaced more parts and re-weighted cables. Still there is no delay in return to floor 1. This is annoying, but no further action is required. 3.2 Updating local OH&S manual Peter reported a discussion with De in the previous week to revise and `volatile' information (such as committee / warden membership and urls to policy documents) be replace with a reference to the CSIT OHS web page, where this information is maintained. However, it was noted that a Fire warden's list should be kept up-to-date on some posters in known locations in the building. Doug said that he did this on the Emergency Exit posters. ACTION: Peter to confer with De on revision of manual. Doug to inform ohs@cs of any changes in the warden membership, with the Chair to maintain the web pages and wardens@cs web page. James to check that ohs@cs & wardens@cs aliases are accessible from outside ANU. Peter to inform Doug of all Emergency Exit posters on North wing, so that Doug can maintain them in the future. Peter to check the RACLO details on the web page are correct. 3.3 Fire panel problems Doug reported that there were 2 problems: false alarm going off, found to be due to an inappropriate installation of a computer in the Machine room. This has since been rectified. The second was an intermittent fault that occurred after the Feb 27 storm. It appears to have been rectified. 3.4 OOS prevention measures As neither Ian nor James S. were present, this item was not discussed. ACTION: Ian and James S. to raise in future meetings, if issues are still deemed pertinent. 4. OOS prevention seminar 2007 Peter raised the issue and it was agreed that one should be organized for autumn 2007. Wednesday at 3pm followed by afternoon tea was thought to be the best time to maximize attendance and awareness of the issues. ACTION: Peter to organize seminar. James and Jocelyn to organize the afternoon tea. Peter/Jocelyn to ensure CSIRO staff are notified. 5. New hazard and injury reports None were reported. 6. Fire Warden training & membership It was noted that there were recent loss of staff who were wardens. It was suggested that newish PhD students would make potentially good wardens, as many are often in the building. ACTION: Doug with Hugh Fisher to go on a recruiting drive soon. 7. CSIT Building Inspection (2006) Peter and James carried one out on 09/01/07. Peter reported that two serious hazards (broken hinge on door N231, exposed power socket in N117) were found; these were reported via Peter to F&S through the DCS Office, and were promptly fixed. Peter reported there were also areas with a lot of junk: TSG area, 2nd level store room, TSG Lab, Moth Lab; however, this was not deemed to be a safety concern. Lynette mentioned there was also such a problem in some student rooms (N223 and N110); N110 also had a lot of broken furniture. Asking Security to yearly purge access to this room helped. Peter finally noted thumbtacks had reappeared on several noticeboards, including those on the 3rd floor (a reminder was sent to all@cs shortly after the inspection on the issue). ACTION: James to see to removal of junk. 8. Any other business 8.1 Change in 1st aid arrangements It was noted that De was now also First Aid Officer. The Committee thanked James for acting as Officer over the last 3 years. 8.2 (Building) issues from the Feb 27 storm It was noted that there seemed to be no unresolved issues over the storm damage. The Committee expressed thanks to all of those involved in the cleanup, particularly F&S.
