The CSIT Building Occupational Health and Safety Committee Meeting Date: Wednesday 10 Sep 2003 Time: 11:25-12:00 Venue: CSIT N335 present: Antoinette Bosman, Ian Barnes, James Fellows, Chris Gunn, Vicki Peterson, Peter Strazdins (chair), Glyn Whitworth (ANU OHS) apologies: MINUTES: 1. Noting of Apologies and Minutes of previous meeting (http://cs.anu.edu.au/ohs/minutes/Jun03). Apologies noted. Minutes confirmed. 2. Matters Arising: 2.1 CSIT water quality - review of management of problem Peter reported that a test had been arranged for 8am Monday August 4. Results are not known yet. ACTION: Peter to pursue the reports. Provided the tests indicate the Student Lounge tap is clear of buildup, the notice next to the tap should be updated. 2.2 New procedures for Hazard / Injury Reporting In response to the new web-based system for reporting bypassing this Committee. Peter reported that on the phone to Michelle Clarke on 3/9, it was arranged that a copy of the report be emailed to head@cs (.anu.edu.au), which is currently forwarded to Antoinette. Antoinette is then to put a hardcopy in the designated folder. Glyn suggested that this should be tested. ACTION: Ian to enter a Hazard report and James to enter a Near Miss report to test the system. 2.3 OSLO Workstation Checks Antoinette reported that she would endeavor to initiate these. 2.4 Unprotected Power Outlets James reported that he had bought some protective plugs. In consulting with the FEIT Business Manager (Steve O'Connor), we should await advice from F&S on permission to install these in publicly accessible areas. ACTION: James to get a response on this. 2.5 CSIT Air Quality - Monitoring Peter reported that Chris had emailed in June that a temperature charter was not available from CSIRO. None of the Committee members expressed enthusiasm to undertake monitoring themselves at this point. It was decided that until there were CSIT occupants sufficiently concerned by the temperature in the building to do this, that this point need not be further considered by the Committee. 3. Review CSIT Hazard and Injury Reports (regular item) None were entered in folder in the DCS Office. 4. Other Business. 4.1. Electrical Safety Checks. It was reported that this was currently being undertaken in FEIT, with James being involved in the process. Glyn suggested that checking of loose power outlets might also be needed, especially on outlets used by cleaners. Chris brought up the issue of covering the VE Lab (rented by CSIRO). Glyn advised that ANU-owned equipment should be inspected by ANU. ACTION: James to ensure that ANU owned equipment in the VE lab is considered for testing. Glyn suggested that the equipment owned by the cleaners should also be inspected. ACTION: Glyn with Peter to look at the equipment immediately after the meeting 4.2 Loose Sprinkler Collars James reported an incident a few months ago where a loose collar from a ceiling sprinkler had fallen, narrowly missing him. James and Peter subsequently inspected these and tightened a half dozen on level 2 that were loose. Peter reported that a F&S technician had called in and reported that the others in CSIT were OK, and that it was OK for us to tighten them ourselves. ACTION: Committee to consider an annual building inspection next meeting, including checking these and loose power outlets (see 4.2 above) -------------------------- Meeting concluded 12:15.
