The CSIT Building Occupational Health and Safety Committee Meeting ================================================================== Date: Wednesday September 14 2005 Time: 14:05-15:00 Venue: CSIT N335 present: Ian Barnes, James Fellows, Damien McAullay, Peter Strazdins (chair) MINUTES: 1. Noting of Apologies and Minutes of previous meeting (http://cs.anu.edu.au/ohs/minutes/Jun05) Apologies from Bronwyn and Vicki. As Bronwyn is leaving DCS shortly, the Committee expressed its thanks to Bronwyn for her contributions to the Committee and as OSLO Officer. Minutes approved subject to quoting the dubious term `tendosynitis'. 2. Matters Arising: 2.1 Local Policy for Children Within the Workplace: The draft http://cs.anu.edu.au/ohs/ChildInWorkplace.html has been approved and is linked from main CSIT OHS page. The policy is to be re-raised at a DCS meeting for reconsideration by the department. 2.2 Status of Computer Science First Aid Kit Peter reported that the Kit was last replenished on 16/06, and that that an arrangement with Parasol has been set so that they will replenish upon request. 3. New Hazard and Injury Reports None were reported. 4. Air Conditioning Status Peter reported that the compressor had failed and that from mid-last last week, fresh air was being circulated to compensate for this. The compressor was expected to be fixed within a fortnight. There was a discussion on the quality of air inherent in such systems, as illustrated by the periods of stale air in previous weeks. ACTION: James to request (via Antoinette?) air testing be done when the new compressor is installed, to ensure acceptable air quality is met. 5. Other Business. 5.1 Keyboard-mouse strain prevention James reported that several people had felt such strains developing, and suggested that it might be useful to remind people of things like using the mouse left-handed. Peter responded that this had been done about a year ago (http://cs.anu.edu.au/ohs/bulletins/May04). ACTION: Peter to send out a new reminder. 5.2 Review of CSIT Evacuation Aug 05 This was discussed, as it was the first `for-real' evacuation of the building. While the evacuation proceeded safely and smoothly, James pointed out that some people started leaving on the warning tone, and did not wait for the announcement. Also, as the building was then closed, many people were caught out in the sense that they took valuables such as wallets and keys, but did not take with them things required to go home. Perhaps the announcements should make it more clear what to take when evacuating. ACTION: Peter to raise this with the Fire Wardens. Meeting concluded 14:30.
