The department uses GNU Emacs as it's primary editor for staff
and students. Emacs has been integrated into the CDE
environment.
Oracle:
The department uses the Oracle RDBMS for teaching and research.
HelpDesk:
A WWW-based helpdesk system, based on the GNU GNATS
problem report management system, has been implemented and is in
use.
DAIS, Tycho and ATLES:
Administrative student information systems used within the
department.
Operating Systems (Linux) Laboratory:
The department has a lab of Pentium-based PCs that run Linux.
Administering the machines is largely the responsibility of the
students using the lab, but I provide advice and coordination.
RPM:
Where possible, we've taken to administering our 3rd party
software using the Red Hat Package
Manager. I've packaged quite a lot of software for Solaris
using RPM.
