AND BRING A HARDCOPY TO THE MEETING PLEASE! Finally I would like review what a CoP is what benefits it aims to achieve, and to ask you what you would like to do for the next 2 CoP meetings (week 9: tentatively Implementation and Testing Issues, and week 11: not yet specified), so that they can be productive to you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: eScience Project CoP 6, 4pm May 11 CSIT N101 Hi eScience Project CoP, a reminder for our 6th session this Thurs: Implementation and Evaluation Issues in this session, I propose that we cover what is expected in implementation, e.g. * quality issues (robustness, readability, extendibility) * supporting description in reports and then in Evaluation (testing and experimentation, with some excepts from Zobel Ch 11) * what to test / evaluate? * what to compare it to? what data to use? * issues interpreting results and drawing conclusions * reproducibility of results: - use of scripts, notebooks followed by a short class exercise: * a brief description of implementation / evaluation so far in your projects (comp6701/02/03 - be prepared!) * a discussion of common issues We will need to finish promptly at 16:55 as I have a lecture at 5pm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: eScience Project CoP #7, 4pm May 25 CSIT N101 Hi eScience Project CoP, a reminder for our 7th session this Thursday: Writing Up Reports: Finer Details in this session, I propose that we cover the topics: * writing style: economy (p8), tome (p8-9), use of examples (p12), motivation (p13) [Zobel Ch 2] * (p83) graphs: simplicity (p84), appropriate scale & labelling (p86), vs tables (p90); diagrams: simplicity (p99,102), layout (p103); tables (p104), use of captions / text referencing (p105) [Zobel Ch 6] * editing reports: consistency (p130), proofreading (p131-2), checklist (p134-5)[Zobel Ch 8] followed by a Small Group Exercise: * BRING IN A HARDCOPY of your latest draft report (doesn't matter if its rough or you haven't worked on it for a while ... this will help you get back into it!) * evaluate each other's reports on the above points (and also on Structure and Setting Out, Citations from CoPs 4 & 5) offer suggestions and feedback If anyone has other suggestions (e.g. would like to look at s2 2005 reports), please let me know ASAP. Looking forward to seeing you there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: eScience Project CoP #8, 4pm Thu Jun 8 CSIT N101 a reminder for our 8th session this Thursday: Improving Presentations In this session, I propose that we: * discuss excerpts from the 2nd half of Zobel Ch 10 (please have a look at / bring along the materials incl. 1st half of Zobel Ch 10 from CoP #1 if possible) * bring a draft of your slides for next week; each of you will show the slides and do a practice talk for 2-3 of the slides, while the rest of us offer feedback Clearly, significant preparation will be required for the latter! Also, you will need to think of how you will present your slides, i.e. on my Windows XP laptop, or your own. If the former, email me your slides beforehand or bring them in on a memory key. If the latter, you will need to bring in your laptop and ensure that it works (i.e. can drive the video projector properly). If you need network access (e.g. for a demonstration), make sure that works too - note that N101 has poorer wireless reception than in other parts of the building. In any case, like a good triathlon, we need to get our transitions fluent! Finally, some thought should be given to your final presentations! The time allocated for each talk will be: COMP6701: 20 mins COMP6702: 30 mins COMP6720: 20 mins COMP6702: 35 mins Allow 5 mins of this for questions / transitions. Also (excepting COMP6720 and possibly COMP6702), allow for a demonstration (if it is not feasible to run a demo from N101, please let me know ASAP). The demonstration need not be `live', i.e. it could consist of a series of screenshots (however, in that case, I will need to see a live demonstration at some point). But if it is live, you will probably need to use your own laptop. A key element of good presentations is thorough preparation! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: eScience Project CoP #9, 9:30-12:40 Thu Jun 15 CSIT N101 Hi eScience Project CoP, a reminder for our 9th and final session next week: Final Project Presentations See below for a schedule for your Final Presentations. Everyone should attend both sessions, and I will provide forms for you to give each other feedback. As mentioned before, please invite your client/supervisor for your talk. Please respond ASAP if there is a problem with the schedule. It can be changed but only for a good reason. 09:15 N101 opens for checking setup, downloading of slides etc 09:28 Introduction by eScience Project Co-Ordinator 09:30 TG MQ Network Mapper (EDS) 09:50 JL Semantic Web for Museums (TW) 10:20 YL A Gui Interface to the Gene Analysis Program SigMotif 10:50 break 11:00 HB Multithreading Issues on the Contemporary PowerPC Microprocessors (PES) 11:20 DM Nearest Neighbour Searching in High-Dimensional Metric Space (SH) 11:40 TB Methodologies for Network-level Optimization of Cluster Computers (AT/PES) 12:15 YL Interactive Reconstruction of Archaeological Fragments in a Collaborative Environment (RH/HG) 12:40 Closing remarks and CoP Survey Distribution For your presentation, allow 5 minutes for questions and transitions. Please be well-organised and reasonably to the point. An overhead projector will be provided. As far as I know from CoP #8, everyone will be using their own laptop, except #### and #### who will use ####'s laptop. I will bring by my WinXP (for powerpoint (OpenOffice1.1) or pdf slides), and we could set up an eScience Linux PC as well - pls let me know ASAP if you will need either. Please give me an electronic copy of your slides either beforehand or during the session (bring a USB key). As mentioned earlier, a demonstration if feasible/useful should be part of your talk. Please make sure beforehand that all technology that you will rely on works at the venue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: eScience Project CoP #9, 9:30-12:40 Thu Jun 15 CSIT N101 Hi eScience Project CoP, On Fri Jun 09 2006 11:59, Peter Strazdins (Peter.Strazdins@cs.anu.edu.au) wrote: ... > See below for a schedule for your Final Presentations. Note: I have tried to design the form to minimize the amount of writing you need to do. Any feedback on the form before the CoP welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: eScience Project Hand-in and CoP #10 Hi eScience CoP, OK, excepting #### and #### who are already finished, a gentle reminder that 4:00 pm tomorrow is the hand-in date. What I need is: * two hardcopies of your final report (pref. bound - ANU newsagent can help) and an email with the following attachments: * softcopy of your final report (preferbaly in pdf) * a zip file of your of your implementation, documentation and other propject artefacts. If there are problems with the latter in an email due to size, burning a CD or transferring it by USB key or scp are alternatives. Also, could you please bring in your completed CoP Survey at that time (or before)? And remind me to give you your presentation evaluations, made by your peers. Henry is giving an interesting seminar at 4:00 pm tomorrow, so could you ensure you do this *before* 4pm? And finally, a reminder that CoP #10 is at the Uni Bar at 5:00 pm on Thurs. First round will be on the facilitator! I will bring the current draft of one of the fruits of our CoP, my EDUC8003 report. You are welcome to critique it there :)
