Intelligent Personal Assistants

Project Code: CECS_194

This project is available at the following levels:
CS single semester, Honours, Summer Scholar, Masters, PhD

Supervisor:

Assoc Professor Jochen Renz

Outline:

Most modern phones such as iPhones or Android phones can access the internet (and therefore our other off-handset resources), track our location and communications, and have considerable computation power. By combining these capabilities with our personal preferences, search,
email and calendar, these devices have all the necessary requirements for being our own personal assistants.
What is needed are ideas of how these intelligent assistants can support us, and then the artificial intelligence that connects all the available information and makes the relevant inferences and recommendations.

In this open-ended project we will work towards developing the artificial intelligence required for such intelligent personal assistants.

The project is suitable for summer, honours, masters and PhD students and can be customized towards the specific interests of the participant.
For example, students who are more interested in practical applications can develop a smart phone application for a specific task.
Students who are more interested in theoretical research, but who would like to work in an exciting area with great practical impact, can work with us on developing the foundations of intelligent PA's. This includes research in areas such as knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning, text and document analysis, planning and scheduling, or location-based services.
