Monitoring Geospatial Regions with Intelligent Sensor Networks

Project Code: CECS_195

This project is available at the following levels:
CS single semester, Honours, Summer Scholar, Masters, PhD

Supervisor:

Assoc Professor Jochen Renz

Outline:

We assume that we have a potentially large number of sensors spread over a certain area. Their locations can be fixed or they can be moving. Each sensor can communicate with one or more other sensors using wireless communication, but communication is restricted due to each sensors battery limitations. Each sensor measures certain properties of the environment at its current location.
The task is to obtain as much up-to-date information as possible about the whole monitored area while optimizing power consumption for communication between sensors.

This project will design robust spatial representations and efficient algorithms capable of supporting consistent decentralized spatial reasoning about our dynamic world. This capability will lead to improved geospatial monitoring technologies for the environment, vital to advancing socially and economically important applications, like emissions trading schemes, climate change, and bushfire monitoring.
