Atmospheric Research Pty Ltd is a Canberra-based company which designs and builds atmospheric profiling equipment, used for meteorological research and pollution control. Its products are described at the website, www.a-research.com.au.
ARPL manufactures a sounder (a radar operating at 1275 MHz with a 300W pulsed power amplifier). This currently acquires data with a conventional high speed ADC after analog downconversion to baseband, followed by conventional signal processing in the Pentium control computer.
The project would examine using a GNU Radio board, associated ADC daughter board, and software, to undertake signal acquisition at an intermediate frequency and subsequent signal processing external to the control Pentium computer. The aim is to provide more flexible operating modes for the sounder, while reducing the processing load on the control computer.
The resultant signal processing hardware and associated software changes would be tested on a sounder at the ARPL fieldsite, at Murrambateman. This is remotely accessible via the web, to assist with troubleshooting and monitoring.
