Accurate and reliable 3D scanning system has significant impacts on robotic navigation and mappings. Existing systems, such as Velodyne or customised Radar scanners, have been successfully used for autonomous cars or mine monitoring. However these systems are highly expensive (~$0.5M) prohibiting its use from majority of robotic applications. The primary aim of this project is to design a prototype of a laser and vision integrated novel 3D scanning system. It requires some skills on microcontroller programming (Ardumega board will be used) and motor control. Experiences on image processing will be advantageous although standard tools will be used. Beyond the project, the developed system could be further utilised to tackle the 3D surface reconstruction or robot navigation problems such as SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping).
