Defect pairing in silicon: Theory and experiment

Project Code: CECS_859

This project is available at the following levels:
Honours
Please note that this project is only for undergraduate students.

Keywords:

Silicon, solar cells, Defect, lifetime, pair, iron-boron, boron-oxygen, simulation, matlab, measurements.

Supervisor:

Dr Fiacre Rougieux

Outline:

There are a number of defects that form pairs in silicon. Such defects affect the solar cell efficiency and their formation kinetics is at this stage not fully understood.

Goals of this project

This project will mostly involve simulating the formation of such defects in silicon at room temperature. Simulation will be done through Matlab. Simulation results will then be compared to experimental data and therefore allow for new physical insights into the formation of such defects and their impact on solar cells.

Requirements/Prerequisites

Semiconductor physics.
Interest in Matlab programmation.

Student Gain

Gain insights into the electronic properties of silicon.
Experience in semiconductor simulation.
