Demand Management in a Smart Grid

Project Code: CECS_906

This project is available at the following levels:
Honours, Summer Scholar, Masters

Keywords:

Smart Grid, Demand Managment

Supervisors:

Professor Sylvie Thiebaux
Dr Menkes van den Briel

Outline:

Imagine millions of customers programming their washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, electric vehicle, or other appliance to run within a time window of their choice. When should each appliance start running so as to balance the load on the network level?

This project is about exploring one or more extensions of the work described in this paper:
http://users.cecs.anu.edu.au/~thiebaux/papers/ijcai13-rlc.pdf

Randomized Load Control schedules the start time of appliances that are programmed to run within a specified time window, so that the aggregate load achieves a given (determined by the utility) ideal load. The approach is entirely distributed and preserves customer privacy as the scheduling happens in each house or building separately.

Goals of this project

Extend the work on randomized load control.

Requirements/Prerequisites

A healthy dose of enthusiasm.

Student Gain

Work on potential future smart grid solutions.
