ABSTRACT:
Over many centuries, some of the most innovative minds in mathematics and computing have explored and capitalised on the intimate connections between these two areas. Examples to support this include Leibniz, von Neumann, Turing and many others. Concepts and ideas from analysis, number theory and algebra have been fruitfully applied to, and have often been inspired by, cryptography, Monte Carlo simulation, computational complexity theory, the numerical solution of linear systems of equations, signal processing, machine learning and optimisation. Richard Brent, who we honour with this symposium, has made important contributions in all these areas at the interface between mathematics and computer science.
The program of this symposium will explore the diversity evolving from the interface between mathematics and computing and will move far into both sides of the interface. We hope that it will provide an excellent opportunity for members of both sides to interact and to discuss common issues and problems.
