ABSTRACT:
With the availability of more and more low-cost and low-power CMOS cameras, Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN) have recently become a reality. In contrast with traditional scalar sensor nodes, multimedia sensor nodes can encode and compress video data before the data transmission, while the energy consumption for this encoding cannot be ignorable, thus this poses a great challenge to save energy of multimedia sensors to prolong the network lifetime. The trade-off between the quality of received video signal and the network lifetime should be also considered.
In this presentation I will report on open research issues and existing solutions in WMSNs, with particular emphasis on design of routing algorithms for network lifetime maximization under multiple constraints including the video signal quality requirement, delivery delay and reliability. I will outline the research plans such as devising distributed algorithms for finding optimal routing protocols to maximize the network lifetime.
