ABSTRACT:
Automated scheduling of ships entering or leaving a port is a problem that has the potential to improve efficiency of port operations, and is related to several other real-world problems. This talk will present a case study of scheduling for an Australian port, and introduce some future research directions in this area. This talk will also highlight some of the complications involved in scheduling ships at a port, including order-dependent waiting times between successive tasks in the schedule; probabilistic scheduling; and scheduling for multiple competing users of a limited resource.
