ABSTRACT:
Is software engineering really engineering? I will revisit this vexed question in the context of the emerging concept of "model-driven engineering" (sometimes referred to as "Model-driven development"). I will outline the concept of model-driven (software) engineering; give several examples from my own research group's work; and discuss strengths and weaknesses of the approach. I will use this approach to compare and contrast MDE for software engineering to other, more established engineering disciplines.
BIO:
John Grundy is Professor of Software Engineering, Head of Computer Science & Software Engineering, and Director of the Centre for Computing and Engineering Software Systems at the Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. Previously he was Professor of Software Engineering, Head of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Director of Software Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has published far too many papers in far too many different areas of Software Engineering, Computer Science and Information Systems. His current research interests include domain-specific visual languages, automated software engineering techniques and tools, innovative user interfaces, knowledge management techniques and tools, and innovations in software engineering education.
