Title: Department of Computer Science Seminar Date: Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 Time: 4:00 pm to 5:00pm Venue: Room N101, CSIT Building [108] Speaker: Dr Ian Barnes (DCS, ANU) Description: Personality Type and Software Development Abstract Why do some people find programming easy but design hard? Why do some people like "hacky" languages like Perl or C, while others prefer more abstract languages like Eiffel or Haskell? Why do some people hate plans while others are lost without them? We all know that people are different. What's interesting is that there is some order to the apparent chaos of personality. And what's exciting is that perhaps we can use an understanding of this to improve the way we teach our students, the way we do software development and the design of languages and tools. I will give an outline of one of the major theories of personality type, the Myers-Briggs type indicator, and then discuss my ideas about how this is relevant to software and my plans for some research on language preference.
