Semester 1, 2009

Seeking Assistance

Teaching Personnel

  • Principal Lecturer: Clem Baker-Finch

  • Principal Tutor: Ben Lippmeier

  • Other Tutors: Malcolm MacDonald, Jack Kelly, James Barker, Aditi Barthwal, Bob Edwards, Gareth Oliver, Greg O'Keefe, Chris Monteith, Srinivas Chemboli

Technical problems

  • For forgotten passwords, go to InfoPlace.

  • For problems with your account on the DCS student system (eg. quotas etc, but excepting forgotten passwords), contact the Consultant Programmer at the DCS Technical Support Group. Note that the CS Undergraduate Student System Documentation may contain the answer to your problem.

  • For problems in tutorial registration, requests for tutorial changes and assignment extensions, or problems with the submission of assignments, contact a Course Coordinator either in person or email comp1100@cs (.anu.edu.au). This year the Coordinator role will be shared by Clem Baker-Finch and Ben Lippmeier.

  • For matters relating the overall organization of the course, contact the Course Coordinator.

Help with course material and assignments

There are a number of ways that you can seek help. Remember, if you are having a particular problem, the chances are that some of your classmates may also encounter it.
  • Your peers: classmates can be a valuable source of help, especially if you take the effort to network with them (which may also prove valuable in the future). Having said that, when it comes to assignments, the amount of help you should ask for (or give) is limited: see the DCS Student Handbook for more details.

  • Forums: On the COMP1100 Announcements bulletin board, we will occasionally put up FAQs and address any significant problems encountered. On the COMP1100 Discussion board, your question may have already been addressed (and solved) by some of your classmates. The lecturer and tutors may also monitor the discussion and contribute from time to time.

  • Drop-in Labs: A number of one or two hour sessions in the DCS labs will be run weekly, depending on demand. The schedule will be announced and updated in lectures and on the COMP1100 web site. They are for the purpose of reviewing concepts, completing laboratory exercises and help with assignments. Expect them to commence in Week 3.

  • Your Tutor: if it can wait till your next practical class, you can bring the problem up with your tutor.

  • The Course Lecturer (Clem Baker-Finch) and Course Tutor (Ben Lippmeier) will also be available for help either in person, or by email, phone or the course forum.
