Word Processing

Aims:

This module is designed to teach techniques which may be useful when preparing essays and papers at university.
The module is not designed to train word processing professionals, nor is it designed to produce desktop publishing experts.

Objective:

After successful completion of COMP1900, students should be able to create and maintain quality documents in Microsoft Word using styles.

Introducing Word Getting started
Creating a new document - the Project Gallery
Saving a new document
Opening a saved document
Ways of viewing a document - Normal, Page Layout, Outline
Working with a long document - scrolling, use of panes
Document structure - Paragraphs, Headings, Sections
Printing a document - Page Setup, Print Preview, Print / Print Layout
Creating a postscript (.ps) file
Editing a document Menus and buttons (icons)
Selecting text
Toolbars - what's on offer
The Clipboard - cut-and-paste, copy-and-paste
The Ruler - margins, indents, tabs
Styling a document Content and appearance
Formatting - fonts, paragraphs, borders, margins, tabs
Using Styles to control layout - modifying styles, creating new styles
Managing "white space" - avoiding empty paragraphs and unnecessary tabs
Blockquotes versus in-line quotation - creating a blockquote style
Visual enhancements - importing pictures and charts
